Pregnant Self-Titled LP out now on Burn Books

Listening to a Nirvana record back in 1994 was like looking in the mirror… every note, every song matched your teenage angst.   The same song could be sad one day, pissed off the next.  Pop in that cassette tape and feel something, man.  Then Pearl Jam and Kurt Loder ruined everything.

But not everything!  Pregnant is the first band in over 15 years to make me feel like a pissed off, secretly depressed hornball.   Do you remember the last time you were truly hot and bothered?  Wanna feel that again? Yes, yes you do.

Pregnant’s album kicks off hard with “Real Talk,” starting the ascent straight up the face of garage punk mountain.   In their back pocket?   A hand-written letter from Iggy Pop to ensure safe passage past any mountain militants who may question this journey.   The fifth track, “Toothache” is one full minute of good, solid slow fucking as front man Kevin Manion croones, “Who really cares about happiness / And I don’t know what’s happening.”

Listening to the album, as 10 tracks build one after an other, feels like an expedition, with a beginning, a middle and an end… a rare victory in today’s dollar-menu music business.  If that’s not punk, then fuck you.

The last track is my favorite, a supernatural climax titled “Wanna See My Gun?”
