“This unique bazaar is part vintage furniture boutique, part art/design bookstore, and part art and lighting gallery. But wait, there’s more! For the month of June, OAM events coordinator Andy Smith is hosting weekly events for the savvy, design driven, and curious of Williamsburg.” – WG Arts+News

“Owner Matt Singer is on a continuing mission to procure items of stellar design and excellent condition.”

“Lamps and art objects complete the space. Open Air Modern has become a destination for those who have always appreciated well crafted works and can finally afford to move pask IKEA. It is a mecca for intrepid shoppers ready to invest in furniture of quality that will endure. Through word of mouth, customers will now come from far and wide, reversing the concept of bridge and tunnel. All the same, the space has not lost the neighborhood vibe that it exists for us, and us alone.

“After all that, is there still room for dessert? Of course there is! Here ye! Here ye! Announcing the Open Air Modern Spring Design Events Series. Each Wednesday in June will offer a free event celebrating art/design and fostering open and intelligent discourse starting at 7pm:

JUNE 15 – Francis Bacon, artist documentary projected screening
JUNE 22 - Public Discourse, street art documentary screening with filmmaker Quenell Jones in dialogue.

OAM presents Spring Design Events Series

Announcing the Open Air Modern Spring Design Events Series!

Wednesday 5/25 – Open Air Modern presents a projected screening of “Milton Glaser: To Inform And Delight” (2008). For many, Milton Glaser is the personification of American graphic design. Best known for co-founding New York Magazine and the enduring I ♥ NY campaign, the full breadth of Glaser’s remarkable artistic output is revealed in this documentary portrait, MILTON GLASER: TO INFORM AND DELIGHT. Artfully directed by first time filmmaker Wendy Keys, the film glances into everyday moments of Glaser’s personal life and capture his immense warmth, humanity and the boundless depth of his intelligence and creativity.

UPDATE: We are thrilled to welcome archivist Beth Kleber and coordinator Zachary Sachs of *The Milton Glaser Design Study Center and Archives* to join us for this event. Panel discussion and Q&A following the screening.

Wedensday 6/1 – Open Air Modern hosts a presenting lecture and discussion with Ned Drew and Paul Sternberger, authors of By Its Cover: Modern American Book Cover Design (Princeton Architectural Press, 2005). Spanning the history of American book covers, By Its Cover is the intertwined story of American graphic design and American literature. Speaking to the annals of book cover design, Mr. Drew and Mr. Sternberger will guide us through already canonized works by Push Pin Studios, Chermayeff & Geismar, Karen Goldberg and Chip Kidd to name a few.

Open Air Modern – Design Events Series

posted in ART, EDITORIAL, EVENTS

1 Screening, 1 Workshop, and 4 Panelists

As many of you know, I enjoy working to organize and host events: punk shows, dance parties, exhibitions, artist talks, all manner of cultural happenings… And so it is with great pleasure that I invite you to attend my latest events series!

This month I have organized a series of design events at the first-class showroom of Open Air Modern.  Located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn at 489 Lorimer Street, Open Air Modern is a carefully curated shop of rare and out of print art and design books along with mid-century modern furniture, lighting and high-modernist design objects.  And the showroom is beautiful!

On Wednesday, March 9th the series kicks off with a screening of selected films by the great designer/architect duo Ray and Charles Eames. Following the screening, Daniel S. Palmer, an Art History doctoral candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center, will lead us in a dialogue concerning the Eames’s work.   Join us for the screening, discussion, complimentary wine and popcorn!

The second event of the series is a workshop on the practices and benefits of Feng shui, the ancient Chinese system of aesthetics.   We are pleased to have Christine Persche, a certified Feng shui consultant and professional design librarian, as our workshop instructor.   Having studied at the New England School of Feng Shui as well as Pratt Institute, Christine Persche is also certified as a United States Green Building Council LEED AP. Join us Wednesday, March 23rd for this special event and reception.

To conclude our event series, we invited four of New York’s unique practitioners from both print and digital publishing arenas to gather as a panel and discuss the topic: Is Digital Enough?  On the changing nature of how we read, process and share ideas.   Moderated by A.P. Smith, our prestigious panelists include Jon Beacham (The Brother in Elysium), Catherine Krudy (Printed Matter), Grant Lyons (GreenerMags) and Peter Costanzo (F+W Media).
