The J. Smith Gang

“The Infamous J. Smith gang – known as such for often using the name ‘J.’ or ‘Jim’ amongst them all – ran a bootlegging syndicate in upstate New York in the 1920s. Often distilling their liquor across the boarder in Canada in roving makeshift cabins, this family of criminals reportedly ran a multimillion dollar operation from 1918 to 1933. Their leader, Jim Smith Sr., was the paranoid mastermind behind the crew and rumor has it that numerous caches of gold bullion and jewels remain to be found along the USA/Canada border.” – Bootleggers and Smugglers, Harvard University Press (2012)

I posted the photo album to Fbook.

The WG News + Arts – Keeping it local.

I wrote two stories for the current issue of the Williamsburg Greenpoint News + Arts newspaper. Each story profiles a local Greenpoint business: Cup, the coffee shop on Norman Avenue, and The Yard, a new co-working facility on Nassau Avenue. Both businesses are a stone’s throw from my loft and it was a pleasure to meet with the owners and craft profiles of businesses in my neighborhood.
