Wednesday: International Psychedelia

posted in BROADCAST, EVENTS, MUSIC

This Wednesday, 1/25 DJ Keyboard Cat has invited me to join him in playing an all-night set of 1970s psychedelic music from all over the world. DJ Keyboard Cat is one of the world’s premiere music ethnographers and I am thrilled to be sharing the decks with him for one of his rare NYC performances! You can expect some Nigerian discofunk, Peruvian chicha, Spansish acid rumba, Mali gangsta rap, and who knows what else. Keyboard Cat and I spent this last weekend listening to a ton of trippy music from all over the world, and we’ve put together a set that we hope will be like nothing you’ve ever heard. Come have a drink and take a listen.

Wednesday, Jan 25
ALTERED: International Psychedelia
with A.P. Smith & DJ Keyboard Cat
at The Bedford 110 Bedford Ave.

9pm till last call = FREE FUN!

Recorded live in Greenpoint, Brooklyn

Tonight Professor Wexler and I recorded the second installment of our radio show. It’s about an hour long and we play hits by Jeff Mangum, Chairlift, Kendrick Lamar, Etta James, and more. We sound amazing – you should really take a listen.

Top Ten Albums of 2011

posted in BROADCAST, EDITORIAL, MUSIC

Has it been a year already?

It’s been some time since I produced a radio show. Some of y’all may remember Yr Weekend Starts Now, my weekly radio show at Newtown Radio. Getting in the studio and playing music and discussing music for a couple hours, it’s the best! I miss it.

And so: Professor Wexler and I built a new studio – still working out the kinks – and recorded a show to run through my list of Top Ten Albums of 2011. We’re a little rusty on the mics, we don’t even play any music until the eighth minute and it takes us almost two hours to get through the top ten albums but hey, there’s no rules with internet radio!

You Are All You Need

Lately I’ve been collaborating with a team of designers and illustrators to develop and fulfill a number of upcoming projects… 2012 is gonna be crazy. I’m damn excited. And in preparation for launching these new, client-based initiatives, we’ve built a creative brand as a home to house these various projects.

YOU ARE ALL YOU NEED: a community of creatives based in New York City with professional networks spanning the globe.

Last weekend You Are All You Need hosted a Holiday Pop-Up Store and Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Dozens of artists and artisans crafted holiday ornaments to be exhibited for sale, with a portion of proceeds donated to The Food Bank for New York City. Alongside the ornaments, we curated a selection of items available for purchase including jewelry, apparel and artwork, all made by local artists. We hosted events both Saturday and Sunday in the Pop-Up and will soon be publishing video of the weekend.

Meanwhile, Happy Holidays!

“A” Is For Alligator

My friend Matt Prins has a calm brilliance to his ways. For years now he’s been maintaining a website showcasing Instabooks, books he has made, books his friends have made, and now one book I made. My book is titled “A” Is For Alligator.

Matt asked me to make an Instabook starting with the letter “A” as part of a series of Instabooks called: Alphabooks. For the second year now, Matt Prins has petitioned 26 creative individuals to make a book, each for a letter of the English language alphabet.

Please check out my Instabook and keep up with the daily publishings throughout the next weeks at Instantbooks.wordpress.com
